The conflict has sent oil prices soaring, which in turn is pushing up the cost of food and energy, and raised fears of jet fuel shortages and travel disruption.

As a result, many people are looking at more affordable options such as taking a holiday in the UK.

According to YouGov, nearly one in five (19%) are choosing domestic holidays over travelling overseas this summer.

Others, meanwhile, plan to spend less during the trip itself (18%), and take shorter holidays (16%).

Cost of living a real concern for holidaymakers

Above all else, it’s the cost of living that’s influencing people’s travel choices.

In fact, 42% said it’s the main factor affecting their holiday plans, ahead of hotel or accommodation costs (32%) and airfare prices (29%).

And as a consequence of the Iran war, almost one in five (19%) are worried about safety or geopolitical issues.

What are Brits doing to cut holiday costs?

Nearly one in three (31%) people are planning to save money on their summer holiday by travelling during off-peak dates.

Meanwhile, about one in five (21%) said they booked their summer holiday earlier in order to take advantage of lower prices.

In addition, a fifth (20%) compared travel websites before booking.

So if you’re put off going on holiday by the likely cost, it could be worth exploring tactics like this to reduce what you pay.
