Debt remains a taboo subject
Personal debt remains an uncomfortable subject for many people, a new study has found.

Money app Plum asked people what subjects they think are off limits and personal debt came top of the list, ahead of:
- Donald Trump
- salaries
- personal savings
People don’t want to be judged
Many people are reluctant to talk about so-called taboo subjects partly because they’re worried about how they’ll be perceived by others.
For example, 21% said they’d avoid discussing sensitive topics because they don’t feel educated enough.
Meanwhile, 20% said they’d fear being judged, and 28% admitted they were worried about starting an argument.
But Plum believes that not talking about financial matters could do more harm than good, as many will be missing out on chances to make the most of their money.
Rajan Lakhani, head of money at Plum, said: “When people do engage, they realise it’s much easier to take action than they think, whether it’s tax-free returns through an Isa to setting money aside for a rainy day.”
