Digital ID is on the way - what could it mean for you?
Since the government confirmed plans to create a new digital ID system, most of the headlines have focused on how it could help tackle illegal working.

But ministers also think it could make it easier for people to access vital government services, such as education and welfare.
And now work and pensions secretary Pat McFadden has suggested digital ID could help the government crack down on benefit fraud as well.
Speaking at a POLITICO event at the Labour conference in Liverpool, he said: “I think we do want to explore this.
“The potential for convenience for people in accessing public services is really high.”
The list of possible uses and applications for digital ID is getting longer by the day.
So what could it mean for you - and will it make a positive difference to your life?
Let’s take a closer look at exactly what ministers have announced.
What is digital ID and what is it for?
Digital IT will be a secure form of identification that you can have on your phone, featuring your:
- name
- date of birth
- information on nationality or residency status
It will also have a photo as the basis for biometric security, similar to a passport.
How will it benefit me?
The government hopes digital ID will have many advantages, such as:
- streamlining access to services like benefits, childcare and education by making it easier to prove who you are
- helping people fill in forms more quickly
- helping renters quickly prove their identity to landlords
- helping tackle identity fraud
- making it easier to keep your personal data up to date
- proving your identity when you’re voting in elections
- helping to stop illegal working
Will it be mandatory?
You won’t have to carry your ID or be asked to produce it.
But digital ID will be required to prove you’re entitled to work in the UK.
So employers will need to use it to confirm you can legally work in this country.
Will I have to pay for it?
No. Digital ID will be free, so everyone can access it regardless of their income.
What if I don’t have a smartphone?
Although the idea is to have digital ID stored securely on your phone, the government is looking at ways to make the scheme more inclusive, such as offering physical alternatives to those without smartphones.
Will I still need a passport?
Yes. A digital ID won’t replace your passport for international travel.
You’ll still need the physical document at airports and borders.
When will digital ID be introduced?
The government wants to roll out digital ID to all UK citizens and legal residents by the end of this parliament.
In the meantime, it’s working on the design and technical details and will open a public consultation later this year.
In short, digital ID could make life easier by cutting down paperwork and speeding up access to services, and also help the government prevent fraud.
But as always, the devil is in the detail, and we’ll be here to keep you updated as the plans progress.
