Discover England without breaking the bank
This week marks English Tourism Week, a campaign to shine a light on England’s world-class tourist attractions and encourage people to visit them.

Of course, you might think a day out with family or friends might be an expensive luxury you can’t afford.
But the campaign, run by VisitEngland, is also pushing the message that with a bit of planning, you can explore some amazing places without spending a fortune.
Visit free attractions
You don’t have to pay a huge entry fee to enjoy a great day out.
Across England, there are plenty of free museums, galleries and cultural attractions, where you can spend hours exploring without spending a thing, such as:
- The British Museum, London
- National Gallery, London
- Tate Modern, London
- Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester
- The Lowry, Salford
- World Museum, Liverpool
- National Railway Museum, York
- Royal Armouries, Leeds
While you might have to pay to view some special exhibitions, entry to the main collections is usually free.
Get a multi-attraction pass
You can get passes that offer entry to different attractions for a single up-front price.
So if you’re thinking of having several days out this year, it could work out cheaper than paying for each visit individually.
Options worth looking at include:
- The Merlin Annual Pass, which includes attractions like Alton Towers Resort, LEGOLAND Windsor Resort and SEA LIFE London Aquarium
- National Trust membership, which gives access to hundreds of historic houses, gardens and coastlines across England
- English Heritage membership, covering over 400 historic sites such as Stonehenge and Dover Castle
Even after just a couple of trips, you’ll find these passes and memberships quickly pay for themselves.
Buy tickets in advance
Many attractions offer discounted prices for advance bookings, so if you want to save money, get your tickets online.
You might also be able to skip long queues at the entrance if you’ve already booked ahead.
Explore England’s national parks
England is home to 15 stunning National Parks, such as:
- the Lake District
- the Peak District
- the Yorkshire Dales
From scenic countryside walks to cycling routes and picnic spots, they offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and spend time in the great outdoors.
And they’re all free to enter.
Look for special deals
If you’re flexible about when you travel, it’s worth searching online for last-minute offers or seasonal discounts.
Websites and travel apps often highlight special deals on attractions, accommodation or experiences, which can make a trip much more affordable.
Cut costs by travelling by train
If you’re planning a trip further afield, you might be wondering about how much it will cost you in petrol and parking.
So people are being encouraged to travel by train instead, as regulated fares have been frozen for the first time in 30 years.
As tourism minister Stephanie Peacock says: “With the rail fare freeze making train travel more affordable and a wealth of budget-friendly options available, now is a great time to discover the incredible places right on our doorsteps.”
With spring just around the corner, now’s the perfect time to head out and enjoy what England has to offer.
And remember it doesn’t have to come with a huge price tag.
