Do you feel ripped off at motorway service stations?
When you’re on a long drive, taking a break is really important. But a stop at the service station isn’t always cheap. So how do you make sure you’re not spending more than you can afford?

Well, it’s all down to preparation.
Pack your own food
According to new AA figures, less than one in five (17%) drivers think food and drink prices at service stations are good.
But almost twice as many (31%) think prices are poor.
So instead of paying excessive prices for a snack at the services, why not buy your own food beforehand?
Make some sandwiches at home, load up your car with supermarket snacks and maybe bring a flask of tea if you think you’ll need a hot drink - and you’ll save a huge amount of money.
Fill the tank before setting off
Petrol and diesel cost premium prices at service stations.
So if you’re planning a long drive, fill up before you get on the motorway.
Take advantage of reward schemes
If you regularly have to go on long drives, find out which service stations have fuel and food retailers that offer loyalty discounts and rewards.
Many petrol station chains offer loyalty schemes where you can get a discount on your fuel, and food retailers have apps where you can get points that you can turn into freebies.
So planning your journey around these locations could make a big difference to your wallet.
Maintain your vehicle
You’ll use less fuel if your car is well-maintained, so make sure it’s serviced regularly, your tyres are at the correct pressure and the wheels are properly aligned.

How often should you take breaks when driving?
The AA recommends that drivers take a break every two hours.
As AA president Edmund King says: “If drivers find themselves opening the window or turning up the radio to stay awake, they should take it as a sign they are too tired and need to stop at the next safe place.”
But stopping for a rest shouldn’t have to cost a fortune.
So if you know you’re going to be on the motorway for a few hours, think ahead.
Just a bit of preparation can lead to big savings, so you can look after your budget and your wellbeing on the road at the same time.
