How to make the most of a car boot sale

If you’re trying to clear some credit card debt or just need a bit of extra money, a car boot sale can be a simple way to turn unwanted stuff into cash. But there’s more to it than just chucking everything in the car and hoping for the best.

With a bit of planning and a few tricks, you can make your stall stand out and bring in more money, without spending anything upfront.

Get prepared the day before

Start by sorting through your things and being honest about what’s likely to sell. Clean anything that’s a bit dusty or scuffed. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but a quick wipe can make a big difference.

Pack everything you’ll need: change for cash buyers, carrier bags, price stickers, pens, tape, a notepad and maybe a flask and snacks if you're going to be there for a while.

Some sellers bring a clothes rail and mirror if they’re selling clothes. It makes it easier for buyers and can help shift more items.

If you’ve not sold at that venue before, check their rules in advance. Some only take cash, others might charge different fees depending on your pitch size or vehicle.

Set your stall up to attract buyers

How you lay your stall out can really impact how much you make. Try to make it easy for people to browse. Group similar things together and use boxes or crates to create different levels.

Put your most eye-catching stuff at the front, but don’t hide the cheaper bits. A clear “£1 box” or “everything on this table £2” sign can get people’s attention and draw them in.

Avoid overloading your table. If it looks too messy or crowded, people might walk past.

Be realistic with pricing — and expect to haggle

It’s a good idea to label prices clearly. Many people won’t ask, they’ll just move on. If you’re not sure what to charge, think about what you’d pay for it second-hand.

It’s fine to start a bit higher if you’re willing to haggle, as buyers will often expect it. Offering bundle deals like “three for £5” can also encourage people to spend more.

If you realise you’ve priced something too low, don’t worry. If it sells quickly, you’ve saved yourself the hassle of taking it home again.

Keep your cash safe and know your rights

Most sellers bring a float of coins and small notes in a bag or apron. This is safer than a cash box on the table.

You don’t need insurance to sell second-hand goods casually, but it’s worth knowing that most items are sold as seen. You’re not obliged to offer returns or refunds, but if something’s not working or has a fault, it’s best to be upfront about it.

What really makes a difference?

It’s not just about what you’re selling - it’s how you sell it. A clean, tidy stall, fair prices and a friendly attitude can go a long way.

Arriving early helps you get a good pitch and catch the early bargain-hunters, but don’t pack up too soon. Many people do a last sweep just before leaving.

If you’ve got a good mix of items, a clear layout and a bit of patience, you could easily make £50 - £100 in a morning. That could help pay off a chunk of credit card debt, cover an unexpected bill or give your budget some breathing space.
