And as the cost of living continues to rise, these platforms have been a real blessing for many.

But you can do more than bag a few bargains.

You can also sell any unwanted items you might have languishing in your cupboards and make a little extra cash.

This month is Second Hand September - an annual campaign encouraging shoppers to avoid buying new clothes for the entire month.

So we wanted to get you into good habits so you can make the most of buying and selling pre-loved items and easing the pressure on your wallet.

How to bag the best bargains

Once you’ve created your account on Vinted, Depop or eBay, it’s time to dive in.

Search smart

Start by typing what you want in the search field and using filters for size, colour, and brand to narrow down the results.

Check seller ratings

Always review a seller’s feedback before buying anything.

If they have high ratings and lots of completed sales, you can probably expect a smooth transaction.

Ask for more details

If you’re not sure about an item, don’t hesitate to contact the seller and ask for extra photos or measurements.

Good sellers will be happy to oblige and it’s better than possibly wasting money on something that’s not right for you.

Bundle for savings

Many sellers offer discounts if you buy more than one item, which could cut your postage costs if you’re after several things.

How to turn old clothes into money

If you’re decluttering your wardrobe this September, here’s how you can increase your chances of getting a sale.

Take clear, well-lit photos

Take a photo of the item you’re selling from different angles, with close-ups of labels, buttons and any little flaws a buyer might want to know about.

Your pictures should ideally be taken in natural light, so the colour and other details come across vividly and accurately.

Write honest, detailed descriptions

Give potential buyers the information they’ll be looking for, such as the size, brand, condition, and how it fits.

Price competitively

Find out how much other sellers are charging for similar items, so you’re pricing fairly and competitively.

Be responsive

If a prospective buyer gets in touch with questions, reply quickly, so you can capitalise on their interest and get a quick sale.

Post promptly

Ship items as soon as you can within the required timeframe, so buyers aren’t left waiting ages for them to arrive.

If you put items on Vinted, Depop or eBay, chances are you want a quick sale, to get positive ratings and earn good feedback.

So following these tips is really important if you want to build a good reputation as a seller and turn your unwanted items into money.

Good luck!
