We all have those bits and pieces hanging around that we’ve forgotten about or wonder why we bought in the first place.

Shoes you’ve never worn, perhaps, an outfit you only wore once, or some books you never read.

But instead of just chucking them out, you could turn them into some cash by selling everything online.

Where can I sell my items?

Platforms like Vinted, Facebook Marketplace and eBay allow you to buy and sell second-hand goods from the comfort of your home.

Vinted is popular for clothing, footwear and accessories, offering a simple, fee-free platform for individuals.

Facebook Marketplace connects local buyers and sellers, making it ideal for larger items like furniture, while eBay offers access to a global audience with options for auctions or fixed-price sales on everything from tech to rare memorabilia.

Five ways to increase your chances of getting a sale

Simply listing your items online isn’t a guarantee that they’ll sell.

You’ve got to attract potential buyers, show you're trustworthy and tempt them into making a purchase.

And there are five ways to do this.

1. Take clear, well-lit photos

Take a photo of the item you’re selling from different angles, with close-ups of key features, such as labels on clothing, and any little flaws that buyers want to know about.

Plenty of people will be happy to buy items that aren’t quite as good as new, but only if the seller is open about it beforehand.

And try to take your pictures in natural light, so the colour and other details come across vividly and accurately.

2. Write honest, detailed descriptions

Ask yourself what information you’d want and expect if you were a buyer and include it in your description.

For example, a person buying clothing will want to know about the size, brand, condition and how it fits.

And if they’re buying tech, they’ll want to know if the appliance or gadget has been tested recently.

3. Price competitively

See what other sellers are charging for similar items, so you can price yours fairly and competitively.

4. Be responsive

Would-be buyers might get in touch with questions before they hit the “buy” button.

So respond to them quickly and honestly, so you can hopefully convert that interest into a sale.

5. Post promptly

Ship items as soon as you can within the required timeframe, so buyers aren’t left waiting ages for their purchase to arrive.

You might get better feedback from buyers if items are dispatched quickly.

Get these five tips nailed and you’ll soon starting earning good ratings and reviews on your chosen platform.

And that hopefully means you can carry on turning unwanted items into money.
