Users will now be charged a monthly fee of £7.99 for a standard subscription with adverts, up from £5.99 a month.

That’s an increase of a third (33%) and means the cheapest package will cost almost £100 a year.

Meanwhile, the standard plan has gone up by 8% from £12.99 to £13.99, and a premium plan has increased by 10.5% from £18.99 to £20.99.

If you’re an existing subscriber, you’ll be charged the new fee from your next billing date.

Four ways to cut the cost of watching Netflix

Nobody likes a price increase, but there are ways that you can keep costs down.

Go for the cheapest packages

Having ads in the middle of a show isn’t always ideal, but they’re only a couple of minutes at most, and sometimes just 20 or 30 seconds.

So going for a package with ads is a small sacrifice to pay for the sake of extra money in your pocket.

Look at bundle options

Providers like Virgin Media and Sky include Netflix subscriptions as part of a wider package of services.

So it could be worth seeing if you can get a better deal by bundling up streaming TV with your broadband.

Review your subscriptions

Many of us never review or cancel our subscriptions, even when money’s tight and we’re worried about keeping up with essential expenses.

So look at your subscriptions every few months and cancel any services that you’re not using.

If you barely even watch Netflix, why are you paying for it?

Switch services throughout the year

You don’t need to pay for every streaming service all the time.

You only have so much time to watch all the new shows and old favourites on each platform, like Netflix, Apple TV and Paramount+.

So just pay for one at a time so you have the chance to really enjoy what’s on offer, cancel when you’re done with it and move on to the next.
