Save money this summer with homemade hummus
When the summer heat is in full swing, a heavy meal or a hot kitchen is the last thing you want.

So it’s worth turning to light, refreshing options, like salad or cold chicken with wraps or flatbreads.
And you can make it even tastier with a delicious homemade hummus.
It's cheap to make, packed with flavour and much better value than buying a tub from the supermarket.
All you need is a tin of chickpeas and a few simple ingredients.
What you'll need
- one tin of chickpeas, drained
- two tablespoons of tahini
- a tablespoon of olive or vegetable oil
- juice of half a lemon (optional)
- one garlic clove or half a teaspoon of garlic granules
- a pinch of salt
- a splash of water
How to make it
- Drain the chickpeas and add them to a blender or food processor.
- Add the tahini, oil, garlic and lemon juice.
- Blend until smooth.
- Add a splash of water if it's too thick.
- Taste and season if needed.
And that’s it!
It’s ready to serve with your light summer lunch.
A money-saving recipe
A tub of hummus often costs about £1.30 to £1.50.
Just a tin of chickpeas costs just 50p.
And that’s enough to make enough hummus for several lunches.
So it’s a small swap that can save you money week after week if you like a tasty dip with your meal.
Do I have to use tahini?
You might be looking at the ingredients and thinking tahini isn’t necessarily the cheapest ingredient.
So remember you don’t have to use it.
You can still make a tasty version using just chickpeas, oil, garlic and lemon juice.
But if you like to eat hummus regularly, it could be worth investing in a jar.
It lasts for ages in the fridge and can be used to make several batches.
So it should work out much cheaper than buying ready-made hummus week after week.
