But simply assuming you won’t qualify can be a costly mistake.

£3bn in benefits that pensioners are entitled to went unclaimed last year, according to Age UK.

And at the same time, one in four pensioners - more than 3m people - don’t know what benefits they’re eligible for.

So if you’re struggling, find out what help you could get.

It could make a huge difference to your life.

Support is available

If you’re a pensioner on a low income, you might be eligible for pension credit.

This is worth around £4,000 and can also open the door to other benefits, including:

  • help with rent
  • a council tax reduction
  • fuel bill support
  • a free TV licence if you’re over 75

You can make a claim for pension credit on the government website.

Pension credit claims can also be made through the freephone telephone number - 0800 99 1234 - or with a paper application form.

If you have care needs and are over state pension age, you could also be eligible for attendance allowance - worth up to £5,740.
