As part of the new Great British Summer Savings scheme, under-16s in England will be able to travel by bus free of charge during the whole of August.

So if your child is aged from five to 15, they’ll get unlimited journeys on participating local buses without having to register or pay a fare.

At the same time, the cost of tickets into popular attractions like museums, theme parks and cinemas is being cut.

How much could families save?

A family with two children who make a return trip once a week in August could save around £27.

And that saving could make a big difference as parents juggle multiple extra costs during the summer holiday.

“I know the cost of living is a concern for households across the UK,” said transport secretary Heidi Alexander.

“Great British Summer Savings means more people can be excited about getting out and about this summer, whether it’s seeing the Roman Baths, learning something new at the Science Museum, or falling asleep on the bus ride home after a day riding rollercoasters at Alton Towers.”

Andrew Stokes, director of VisitEngland, added that it’s “fantastic” to see children getting free bus travel over the summer holidays.

He said this would help “families to get out and explore the outstanding attractions and destinations across England in a stress-free and environmentally friendly way”.

“There is so much to discover during the summer across England,” he commented.

“I know our tourism and hospitality businesses will be very pleased to see you.

Where can I find discounts this summer?

Countless attractions and businesses have pledged to pass savings on to customers this summer, such as:

  • The London Eye
  • The National Trust
  • Nando’s
  • McDonald's
  • KFC
  • Burger King
  • Wetherspoons
  • Everyman Cinemas
  • Vue
  • Butlin’s

You can find out what's on offer in your area by checking the Summer Savings website.

There's loads of options for families looking an affordable day out this summer - and if you get the bus, your trip can be even cheaper.
