Winter fuel payments begin today
Millions of pensioners are to start getting winter fuel payments from today (12 November).

Everyone over the state pension age with an annual income of £35,000 or less will get financial support this year.
This means that more than nine million pensioners will get help with their bills over the coming months.
How much money will I get?
Pensioners will receive between £100 and £300 from now until the end of December.
The specific amount varies on factors including:
- whether you live as a couple
- if you’re entitled to other benefits
- if you live in a care home
Watch out for scams
As payments start landing in pensioners’ bank accounts, the government has warned people to be on the lookout for possible scams.
Fraudsters are sending text messages claiming to be government officials or payment providers, which invite them to apply for the winter fuel payment.
But winter fuel payments are made automatically, so if you’re eligible for support, you don’t need to take any action.
If you get a text urging you to apply, don’t engage with it and instead forward it to 7726.
It’s free of charge and helps phone providers block the numbers involved.
“Payments are being made automatically throughout November and December, so don’t worry if yours hasn’t arrived yet,” said pensions minister Torsten Bell.
“But do remember to stay alert to scam texts.
“The government will never ask you to share personal information or click on links to claim your payment.”
What other support is available?
Pensioners on low incomes may also be eligible for pension credit.
This is worth around £4,000 and can also open the door to other benefits, including:
- help with rent
- a council tax reduction
- fuel bill support
- a free TV licence if you’re over 75
And if you have care needs, you could be eligible for attendance allowance - worth up to £5,740.
