More than 10 million free breakfasts have now been served to children across England through the government's free breakfast club programme, marking a milestone in its mission to ensure no child starts the school day hungry.

To celebrate the achievement, the education secretary is writing to every primary school in England, informing them of the positive impact the programme is already having on families and encouraging schools to prepare to join over the next two years.
What are free breakfast clubs?
Free breakfast clubs take place before the start of the school day and are available at participating primary schools across England.
Children attending the clubs receive a healthy breakfast and valuable time to settle into school before lessons begin. For parents and carers, the clubs provide an additional 30 minutes in the morning, helping them manage work commitments, commuting, childcare arrangements and other daily responsibilities.
SInce starting in April 2025, the programme is making a big difference for families nationwide. According to government figures, more than 300,000 children are benefiting from the scheme through 1,250 breakfast clubs, with families saving up to £450 per year and gaining around 95 hours of additional time annually.
A practical difference for families
Education secretary Bridget Phillipson praised the programme's success and the positive impact it is having on children's lives.
She said: “I am really proud we’ve now delivered 10 million breakfasts to kids across the country. Thanks to this government, every primary school child will be offered a place at a free breakfast club, meaning no child will start the school day hungry.”
Who can use the breakfast clubs?
If your child's school is taking part in the programme, the school will provide information about how the club works.
You don’t need to complete an application or provide evidence of income. The clubs are not means-tested and are open to all primary school-aged children attending participating schools, making support available to families regardless of their circumstances.
Help available for families facing rising costs
Many households continue to feel the pressure of rising living costs, from food and energy bills to childcare and school uniforms.
If you're finding it difficult to make ends meet, support is available. Getting the right guidance can help you better understand your finances, identify ways to reduce costs, and access assistance that may be available to you and your family.
No family should have to face financial challenges alone, and seeking support early can make a real difference.
