6 ways to make the most of your unwanted Christmas presents

Christmas is just around the corner, and while it’s exciting to receive gifts, not every present always hits the mark. In fact, a recent Finder.com survey found that 3 in 5 Brits – around 31 million people - have received an unwanted gift at Christmas. Across the UK, the total spend on unwanted gifts is estimated at £1.27 billion, with the average value per person being £41. The most common unwanted gifts? Clothes, deodorants, and soaps.

So it seems unwanted gifts happen to the best of us - but there’s no need to let them go to waste. Here are six easy ways to make the most of anything you get this year.

1. Swap with friends or family

If you end up with a gift that isn’t quite right, swapping it with someone else who also received unwanted presents is a quick win. This way, you can get something you actually want, and it can be a fun, social way to make sure everyone ends up happy.

2. Sell online

Apps and websites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Depop are perfect for turning unwanted gifts into cash. Whether it’s gadgets, clothing, or homeware, you can often recoup most - or even all - of the money spent. Just make sure to include clear photos and honest descriptions to attract buyers.

3. Donate to charity

If you’d rather give your unwanted presents a second life, consider donating them to charity shops or local shelters. Your gift could help someone in need, and some charities even offer a small tax relief for donations. This is a feel-good option that benefits your community and keeps the spirit of Christmas going long after the big day.

4. Regift thoughtfully

Regifting has a bad reputation, but done carefully, it can be a smart way to make use of a present. Make sure the item is in good condition and suitable for who you’re giving it to. For example, a scented candle you don’t like might be perfect for a friend who loves home fragrances.

5. Get creative

Some gifts can be repurposed in clever ways. Old scarves can become cushion covers, mugs can turn into mini planters, and jewellery can be redesigned into something new. Pinterest and DIY blogs are full of ideas to help you transform unwanted gifts into something practical or decorative.

6. Use cashback or voucher schemes

Check if the retailer offers exchanges for gift cards or store credit. This is a simple way to turn an unwanted gift into something you actually want without spending extra money. It’s a handy tip to keep in mind while Christmas shopping or after unwrapping presents.
