The Grocer magazine compared the prices of 33 items in a shopping basket and found that the bill at Aldi came to £62.80.

That’s 38p cheaper than at Lidl (£63.18), which came in at second place, followed by:

  • Asda - £65.68
  • Tesco - £68.20
  • Sainsbury’s - £68.95
  • Morrisons - £69.67

Waitrose was named the most expensive, with its basket costing £85.07 - 35.5% more than at Aldi.

“Shoppers know where to find real value - and we’re committed to delivering unbeatable prices every time customers shop with us,” said Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK.

“Our focus doesn’t change - helping customers save on the products they buy, week in, week out.

Ms Ashfield added that Aldi as invested £300m in price cuts since January to ensure lower prices “not just for now, but for good”.

Aldi also tops Which? rankings

This comes just after Aldi has been named as the UK’s cheapest supermarket by consumer group Which?

The consumer group based its calculation on a shopping basket of 71 popular grocery items.

At Aldi, it cost an average of £122.77, just ahead of Lidl (£123.95) and Tesco with Clubcard discounts (£135.64).

Asda came next in the list, with the shopping basket costing £136.98, while Tesco (without the loyalty discount) rounded up the top five at £138.66.
