Amazon customers warned of phone scam
Millions of us have an Amazon account, as you can buy almost anything in just a few clicks.
Published: 12 January 2026
But that can leave the door open for fraudsters who pose as the brands we regularly use and trust.
Consumer group Which? is warning that some criminals are trying to exploit Amazon’s one-time passcode system, so they can lock people out of their accounts and get their card details.
How does the scam work?
Fraudsters can easily get hold of details like a person’s name, phone number and email address.
They can then contact them claiming to be from Amazon, saying that lots of high-value items have been bought through their account.
The caller will then let you know that you’ll get a text message from Amazon containing a passcode.
This will be a genuine text from Amazon, but it’s being triggered because the scammer is trying to sign in or reset your password.
This passcode is the final lock on your account.
So if you give it to a scammer, they’ll be able to get into your account and access your saved card details.
What Amazon says
Amazon has assured customers that it will never contact people first asking for their password, verification codes or other details.
“We encourage consumers to report suspected scams to us so that we can protect their accounts and refer bad actors to law enforcement to help keep consumers safe,” the online retailer said.
“We may ask you to verify your identity if you call customer service for support.”
Amazon added that it’s investing in protecting consumers and educating the public about scams.
How to report Amazon scams
If you get a scam call, forward the number to 7726, so mobile providers can block or ban it.
You should also tell your bank and let Report Fraud know, either on their website or by calling 0300 123 2040.
