Andy Burnham promises cost-of-living support

Measures to help people struggling with the cost of living are set to be announced.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, new prime minister Andy Burnham said he would start outlining plans to give people more “breathing space” tomorrow.

Help for young people

Mr Burnham did, however, point to some of his key ambitions.

For instance, he said he wants to change the education system to help more young people into work and give them more mental health support.

Mr Burnham also repeated his pledge to increase council house building, which he said would help to bring the welfare bill down in a “fair and sustainable way”.

“We will help people to live well, building a more preventative state, investing in people’s success rather than paying for failure,” he said.

An end to rough sleeping

Mr Burnham added that his “first instruction” would be to end rough sleeping across the UK.

“It’s about putting the right values and the right standards at the heart of government,” he said.

Mr Burnham has made tackling rough sleeping a priority during his political career.

As mayor of Greater Manchester, he launched the “A Bed Every Night” scheme in Manchester to make sure every person at risk of sleeping rough gets somewhere to stay and personalised support.

He also donated 15% of his mayoral salary to the Greater Manchester Mayor's Charity to support the scheme.

What else do we know?

Andy Burnham has already confirmed that plans to create digital ID for all British adults are to be scrapped.

The idea was originally put forward to make people’s interactions with the state, such as when they’re applying for benefits, a bit easier.

But the government instead wants to put the “time and resource that was going to be spent on a national ID scheme” to go “where it's most needed, such as helping with the cost of living".

A spokesman for Mr Burnham said: “This reprioritisation of public resource shows a change in direction towards improving everyday life and strengthening local economies over expensive national government schemes."
