Another energy bill change is on its way – here’s how you can get ready

If you're worried about your energy bills, there's another important date to put in your diary.

By 26 August 2026, Ofgem will have announced the next energy price cap, which will determine what millions of households on standard variable tariffs will pay from 1 October to 31 December.

What is the energy price cap?

The energy price cap is set by Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator.

It limits the maximum amount energy suppliers can charge for each unit of gas and electricity if you're on a standard variable tariff.

If you're on a fixed deal, your prices won't change until your fixed term ends, although it's still worth checking whether your current deal remains competitive.

Speak to your supplier early

If you're already finding it difficult to keep up with your energy bills, don't wait until you're in debt.

Many suppliers can offer payment plans, temporary payment reductions, hardship support or emergency help if you contact them early.

See if you're missing out on support

Depending on your circumstances, you could qualify for help such as:

• grants from your energy supplier
• the Warm Home Discount, and don't forget to check your name is on the energy bill
• emergency fuel vouchers if you use a prepayment meter
• home energy efficiency grants
• extra benefits you may not be claiming

Energy debt is still rising

According to Ofgem, energy debt reached £4.79bn between January and March 2026, confirming the financial pressure many families are still under.
