Carers Week 2025: The hidden cost of caring
This Carers Week (9 - 15 June), we’re shining a spotlight on the millions of unpaid carers across the UK – the people who dedicate their time, energy and love to supporting someone who couldn’t manage without them. Whether it’s looking after a parent, partner, child or friend, being a carer is one of the most selfless things a person can do.

But it often comes at a price.
The financial pressure carers face
Caring can take a serious toll on your finances. Many carers have to reduce their working hours or give up work altogether. Others face higher household bills due to extra heating, laundry or travel costs. And yet, despite all they give, carers are often left struggling to stay afloat financially.
Research consistently shows that carers are more likely to be in poverty, in debt, or skipping essentials like heating and food to make ends meet. And when support is available, it’s often buried in red tape.
Billions in support unclaimed every year
Nearly £23bn in benefits goes unclaimed each year in the UK, according to Policy in Practice. That’s money that could be helping people like carers, but instead it’s sitting unused, often because people don’t realise what they’re entitled to or assume they won’t qualify.
At Money Wellness, we want to change that.
If you’re a carer, or know someone who is, our benefits calculator is a great place to start. Fill in details of your financial situation and we’ll let you know if you’re missing out on money you’re entitled to.
Or read about the financial support available in our benefits for carers guide. It explains what financial support might be available and how to claim.
