According to Ocado, sales of frozen food have gone up by nearly a fifth (18%) in the last year.
This is partly because many see it as a cheaper option at a time that food prices are soaring.
What frozen items are shoppers buying?
Frozen vegetables are flying out of the freezers right now, with overall sales going up by 38%.
Sales of frozen fruit, meanwhile, have gone up by 23%.
But it’s not just produce that’s in demand.
For example, Ocado has seen a surge in the sales of frozen pastries and frozen alternatives to kitchen staples like sauces.
Shoppers’ perception of frozen food has changed
It’s not just cost considerations that are fuelling this trend.
Ocado found that three-quarters of shoppers believe the quality of frozen food has improved in the last few years.
And many are being drawn to the freezer section by concerns over ultra processed foods.
Almost half said buying frozen food products helps them cut back on food treated with preservatives.
Others are enjoying the convenience that frozen food can offer.
For example, three-quarters said it can make preparing meals quicker, and two-thirds said it helps them with meal planning.
“Frozen food is seeing a real resurgence,” said Nicola Waller, buying director for fresh and frozen at Ocado Retail.
“It's no longer just a backup option or last resort for rainy days.
“Frozen products are helping households reduce food waste, making cooking more manageable without compromising on taste.”
How can I keep food costs down?
Buying frozen food is a great way to save money, as it’s cheaper, just as good for you and it’ll last longer.
But it’s not the only practical step you can take if you want to spend less at the checkout.
For example, planning your meals in advance and buying plenty of non-perishable food could make a big difference.
