Making switching simple with One Touch Switch

A year ago, a new system called One Touch Switch launched and since then, over 1.6 million people have used it to change their broadband or landline provider.

Regulated by Ofcom, with One Touch Switch you don’t need to contact your old provider or deal with awkward phone calls. You just contact the provider you want to switch to, and they’ll take care of the rest.

It’s that easy.

Whether you want faster speeds, better customer service, or lower prices, One Touch Switch makes it hassle-free.

But our data shows that millions of low-income households are still missing out on even bigger savings because they don’t realise they could qualify for discounted broadband and phone deals known as social tariffs.

Of the 4.3 million eligible households, only around 220,000 (5.1%) are currently signed up to social tariffs. That means millions are still paying over the odds.

What are social tariffs

Social tariffs are cheaper broadband and phone packages for people receiving certain benefits.

They often cost just £12 - £20 a month, about half the price of standard deals, and they can save you around £200 - £250 a year.

You could be eligible for a social tariff if you receive universal credit, and you might qualify if you get any of the following:

  • pension Credit
  • employment and support allowance (ESA)
  • jobseeker’s allowance (JSA)
  • income support

Other benefits like personal independence payment (PIP) or attendance allowance might also qualify but check with your provider to be sure.

How to switch to a social tariff

  • Check with your current provider – ask if they offer a social tariff. Some providers can switch you over with no hassle.
  • No penalties or fees – you won’t be charged to move to a social tariff, even if you’re in the middle of a contract.
  • If your provider doesn’t offer one, you can switch to one that does, and you won’t be charged for leaving early.
  • Use One Touch Switch to make the move, just contact your new provider, and they’ll handle the rest.

Thomas Gibbons, a money adviser here at Money Wellness, said: “It’s brilliant to see so many people taking advantage of Ofcom’s One Touch Switch. Switching has never been easier. But we’re worried too many low-income households are being left behind.

“Social tariffs could make broadband and phone bills genuinely affordable, yet most people who qualify don’t even know they exist. We speak to hundreds of people every day who have never heard of them or understand how they can help reduce their bills.

“With the cost of living still tight, we’d urge everyone to check today if they qualify for a social tariff. It could save you hundreds of pounds a year, and switching couldn’t be simpler.”

If you’re not sure if your provider offers broadband and phone social tariffs, you can check using Ofcom’s full list.
