Could you be paying less for your phone contract?
When you’re looking for a new phone contract, it’s easy to assume you need a big - or even an unlimited - data allowance. But in truth, many of us are only using a fraction of what we’re paying for.

In fact, figures from Which? show that the average Brit uses just 10GB of data a month.
And only 13% use more than 40GB of data a month.
So you could save money if you switch from a deal that offers a generous or unlimited data allowance to a smaller amount.
Bigger isn’t always better
If you use your phone regularly when you’re out and about, you might believe you need a huge data allowance.
And mobile phone providers will go out of their way to make you believe that too - and that they’re offering you a real bargain.
But if we’re using far less data than we realise, it means lots of us are forking out for something we don’t actually use or need.
“Switching mobile network is often motivated by getting a cheaper price,” said Adam Snook of Which?
“And that’s very easy to achieve given how many low-cost deals are around.
“Both times I switched, I got a cheaper deal with extra data and received the extra benefits of increased roaming and a more reliable network connection.
“I’m currently paying £6.95 a month for 15GB.
“It’s plenty of data for me and very affordable.”
Check your data usage
It’s really easy to keep track of how much data you’re using.
If you have an iPhone, just go to “Settings” and click on “Mobile Data”.
And if you have an Android device, go to “Settings”, click on “Network & Internet” and then “Data usage”.
You’ll then be able to see how much data you’ve used over a set period.
Alternatively, your mobile provider’s app or online account will usually show your monthly usage.
Try to check your usage over a few months and ask yourself:
- are you consistently using far less than your allowance?
- do you ever come close to your limit?
If you’re not using as much data as you’re paying for, then it could be time to switch and choose a plan that not only suits your real needs, but also saves you money.
