Well, consumer group Which? has compared six supermarkets for the shelf lives of products such as fresh pasta sauce, pork sausages and bread that have been ordered online.

Asda came top of the list, with its food having an average remaining shelf life of 11 days.

This was followed by:

  • Morrisons - 10.4 days
  • Ocado - 10.4 days
  • Sainsbury’s - 10.2 days
  • Tesco - 8.8 days
  • Waitrose - 7.7 days

It pays to shop around

Good value isn’t just about price, particularly when it comes to food.

You want ingredients and products that, ideally, will be the best possible condition for the next week or so.

So if you’re in the habit of ordering from the same supermarket and often find yourself chucking out food that’s gone bad, it could be worth mixing it up a bit.

“When you pay for a supermarket delivery, you expect your fresh food to have a reasonable amount of time left on it,” said Reena Sewraz, retail editor at Which?

“Our investigation found a striking difference between supermarkets, with some shoppers getting several days’ less time to use their groceries than others - and in some cases, just hours.”

The findings come just after Asda was named the cheapest place to get branded items and the third cheapest supermarket overall, just behind Aldi and Lidl.

What else can I do to keep costs down?

As well as shopping around for the best deals, it’s a good idea to create a budget.

If you know how much money is coming in and going out, you can prioritise your spending and work out what you can afford to spend.

We’ve also put together some handy tips on how to keep the cost of your weekly shop down, which could help your money go further.
