Do you feel pressure to give to good causes?

Many of us will know the feeling of being stopped by a charity collector in the street or a colleague asking us to sponsor them for a marathon.

But at a time when cost-of-living pressures are continuing to bite, this is increasingly becoming a bone of contention.

According to research from BuytoGive, nearly six in ten (59%) Brits suffer from what it terms “charity fatigue”.

In other words, people are getting sick of regularly having to dip into their pockets to support good causes when they’re struggling to pay their bills.

Half of Brits unhappy with being asked for money by friends

More than half of those polled (51%) said they’ve have enough of friends doing charitable events and asking for money.

Meanwhile, over two-thirds (68%) said they feel under pressure to donate money that they can’t afford.

“We all have genuinely good-spirited friends who are regularly looking at ways to give something back,” said Kevin Turner, founder of BuytoGive.

“While we admire their spirit, it is exhausting and a big drain on household budgets to regularly have to make donations.”

Peer pressure puts people off donating

Part of the problem is that not everyone can keep up with others when it comes to charitable giving.

In fact, more than half (54%) said they feel peer pressure to match the donations of those who give more generous amounts.

And one in three (33%) don’t like the fact that sites like JustGiving make public how much money they’ve donated.

"This naming and shaming can be humiliating for some people who are on far lower incomes than richer friends,” said Mr Turner.

Two-thirds don’t like chuggers

Charity canvassers - often known as chuggers - were also found to be particularly unpopular.

More than two-thirds (67%) said they don’t like being approached by them either in the street or at home.

Just one in four (26%) said they’re happy to speak to charity canvassers, while almost half (45%) said they ignore them completely.
