The good news is your energy supply won’t be cut off, and any credit on your account is protected. You’ll automatically be moved to a new energy company soon – and here’s what you should do in the meantime:

  1. Don’t switch suppliers
Wait until Ofgem has appointed your new supplier and you’ve heard from them. This helps avoid confusion or delays when transferring your account.
  2. Take a meter reading
Make a note of your meter readings today and keep them somewhere safe. You’ll need them when your new supplier gets in touch to make sure your billing is accurate.
  3. Keep an eye on your inbox and post
You’ll be contacted by your new supplier in the coming days with all the details about your new energy plan and how to access your account.

While you wait, your energy supply will continue as normal, and you’ll be protected by the energy price cap – so your bills shouldn’t suddenly skyrocket.

What about my credit balance?

If you’ve built up credit on your account, don’t worry – Ofgem guarantees this money is safe. Your new supplier will honour it once the transfer is complete.

Rohan Churm, Ofgem’s director for financial resilience and control, said:

“I want to reassure Tomato Energy customers that they do not need to worry. They will not see any disruption to their energy supply, and any credit domestic customers have on their accounts remains protected under Ofgem’s rules.”

In short

If you’re one of Tomato Energy’s customers:

✅ Your gas and electricity won’t be cut off
✅ Your credit balance is protected
✅ You’ll soon be switched automatically to a new supplier
✅ You should wait to hear from that supplier before making any changes

While it can be unsettling when your supplier goes bust, Ofgem’s protections mean you’ll be looked after – and you don’t need to take any immediate action apart from recording your meter reading.
