So with oil prices this week jumping to their highest since 2022, many drivers are starting to count the pennies.

In fact, research from Which? shows that 83% of motorists were worried about fuel prices in March.

That compares with 71% in February.

As a result, more than two-thirds (69%) are changing their driving habits in order to lower costs.

For example:

  • 33% are making fewer leisure trips
  • 23% are planning journeys more carefully
  • 13% are visiting friends and family less

How to cut the cost of motoring

Of course, there’s not much we can do about soaring oil prices.

But we can make a few small changes to our behaviour that will save us money and mean we don't have to give up doing the things we love.

Change your driving style

How you drive affects how much fuel you use, so take steps to conserve fuel, such as:

  • accelerating gently
  • braking gradually
  • driving in the correct gear

Shop around for the best fuel prices

You can get real-time fuel prices on platforms including:

So instead of running the risk of being overcharged, you can easily find the cheapest petrol and diesel in your area.

Use loyalty schemes, smartly

Loyalty cards can help, especially if you use the same petrol station regularly, but only if the fuel price is already competitive.

Popular options include:

  • Tesco Clubcard - 1 point per two litres
  • Nectar at Sainsbury's - e.g. 300 points for 5p off per litre
  • Shell Go+
  • BPme Rewards
  • Texaco Rewards

We’ve put together a list of 50 ways to cut your fuel costs, so you can start saving money on the road straight away.
