But the cost of all these outings can quickly add up.

In fact, new figures from Butlins show that the average family of four could spend more than £430 on Christmas activities this year.

For instance, a trip to Santa’s grotto would cost them £60 and pantomime tickets can set them back around £120.

Festive arts and crafts sessions are also expensive, costing £130 or more, and a trip to the funfair can cost £80.

And then add in watching a Christmas film at the cinema and you’re another £40 lighter.

Parents feel under pressure to spend

Of course, parents will want to make the festive season truly magical for their little ones.

But that desire can quickly come up against harsh financial realities.

For example, 56% of parents say they feel pressured to spend more than they can realistically afford at Christmas.

And of those who feel pushed to spend, 40% say the pressure comes from family or friends, and 39% say it’s fuelled by social media.

Many parents are also conscious of rising prices, as 82% say the cost of Christmas has jumped dramatically in the last five years.

“After a challenging year, it’s no surprise families are watching their spending and looking for great value this Christmas,” said Mike Godolphin, entertainment director at Butlin’s.

However, he insisted that Christmas cheer “shouldn’t have to cost an arm and a leg”.

“The season is all about shared moments of joy - the laughter, the entertainment, the feeling of being together,” Mr Godolphin added.
