Nearly eight in ten people (79%) believe moments of fun are important for mental health, according to a poll by Rowntree’s.
But over one in three (35%) say they’re under too much pressure to properly unwind and switch off.
As a result, many are turning to smaller, more budget-friendly ways to get through the day, such as spending time outdoors.
How to enjoy the outdoors on a budget
Of course, not everyone has easy access to green space.
Where you live and what you earn makes a big difference.
So if you don’t have open countryside on your doorstep, it’s well worth looking for alternatives like:
- local parks
- community gardens and allotments
- riversides and canals
- urban wetlands and reserves
- ‘wild’ urban spaces
A walk or light jog around the block could also make a big difference, letting you switch off from your day-to-day responsibilities for a few minutes and help you clear your head.
What else can I do to switch off?
Admittedly, it’s easier said than done, but if you’re worried about money, make a concerted effort to stop thinking about it at least some of the time.
Yes, it’s really important that you acknowledge financial reality.
But resting your mind is vital to your wellbeing too.
Try meditating, breathing exercises, using mindfulness apps, listening to music - whatever works for you.
And set aside some time in the day where you allow yourself to switch off.
