Is more cost-of-living support on the way?

Andy Burnham has suggested that more cost-of-living support will be announced in the coming months.

Since becoming prime minister, he’s made several announcements to ease the pressure on household budgets, including:

• removing VAT from household electricity bills from October
• capping bus fares in England from January
• making it easier to cancel subscriptions 

But while many have welcomed the measures, some have argued they don’t go far enough to help struggling households.

And speaking to the BBC’s Wake Up to Money, Mr Burnham said: “I can accept criticism that this isn't enough, because I wouldn't say it's enough.”

However, he said he wants to deliver an “accumulation of smaller things" that "combine to take the pressure down" on household budgets.

“I take an approach to politics where I do what I can, when I can,” Mr Burnham commented.

“Just take that little bit of pressure off and address an issue that you know needs addressing.”

What’s in the PM’s sights?

While we don’t yet know what further announcements might be on the way, we have had some hints about areas that the PM at least wants to look at.

For instance, he told Wake Up to Money he believes there should be more public control of essential services, such as energy, water and housing.

This, he said, “would mean we could get to a more substantial answer to the cost-of-living crisis”.

However, Mr Burnham admitted that reversing privatisation in sectors such as water would not be easy.

“But very much, I’m looking at what can be done,” he said.

Mr Burnham also said he wants to “remodel the rail fares so that we can get more public benefit for people”.

Just last week, he told the Sunday Mirror that he thinks rail fares are “too high, outrageously so in some instances”.

Could cost-of-living measures be announced in the Budget?

Mr Burnham went on to confirm he’s already asked chancellor John Healey to look at what can be done to help households in the Budget.

That takes place on 28 October, so we might have to wait until then for more substantial cost-of-living announcements.
