For three brothers clearing out their late mother’s home, the answer was a resounding yes.

While sorting through dust and cobwebs, they discovered a Superman No. 1 comic, a rare first edition from 1939, tucked away since before WWII. Their mother had often hinted at a valuable collection hidden somewhere in the house, but no one had seen it for decades.

Only a few hundred copies of Superman No. 1 are believed to exist today, and their find turned out to be extraordinary.

The comic sold at auction in Texas for a record-breaking $9.12m , making it the most expensive comic ever sold.

If that doesn’t inspire you to explore your attic, cellar, or garage, nothing will.

Is your attic hiding hidden treasure?

Your home could be hiding all sorts of valuable items, such as vinyl records, rare coins, vintage jewellery, old toys and more.

According to home insurer HomeProtect, some of the most valuable attic discoveries typically include:

  • coins and stamp collections
  • vintage jewellery
  • antique furniture
  • vinyl records
  • clocks
  • ceramic figures
  • lamps
  • paintings, prints and posters
  • war memorabilia

Turn clutter into cash

Even if you don’t uncover a six-figure treasure, a good clear-out can easily turn clutter into cash. Old clothes, children’s toys, gadgets and unwanted furniture can be worth more money than you might think.

Platforms like Vinted, eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree make selling simple and accessible.

So, what are you waiting for? Your attic might be home to the next record-breaking discovery.
