Millions more to get £150 off their energy bills this winter - are you one of them?
Good news if you’re worried about rising energy costs – around two million more households in England and Wales will automatically get £150 off their energy bills this winter, thanks to an expansion of the warm home discount scheme.
Published: 19 June 2025
That brings the total number of people who’ll benefit to around six million, including:
- 900,000 families with children
- 1.8 million households in fuel poverty
The warm home discount is a one-off payment that’s taken directly off your electricity bill sometime between October and March. It was first introduced in 2011 to help people on low incomes manage soaring energy costs.
What’s changed?
Previously, only those on the guaranteed element of pension credit, or those on means-tested benefits living in a home with a high energy score were eligible.
The high energy score requirement has now been scrapped, meaning millions more people will qualify automatically.
You don’t need to apply. If you’re eligible, your energy supplier will apply the £150 discount for you. That’s one less form to fill out – and one less thing to worry about.
Who’s eligible?
In England and Wales, you’re likely to get the Warm Home Discount if you get any means-tested benefits, regardless of the energy score of your property.
The government uses data it already holds to decide who qualifies, so there’s no need to opt in.
(Scotland has a slightly different system, so if you live there you may need to apply – check with your energy provider to be sure.)
Why now?
Prime minister Keir Starmer said the move is about helping working people feel more secure during the cost-of-living crisis:
“I know families are still struggling… Extending this £150 support to millions more families will make a real difference.”
The expansion comes alongside other positive updates:
- Energy bills are set to drop from July, with Ofgem’s energy price cap falling by 7%, bringing the average annual bill down from £1,849 to £1,720.
- And there’s been a partial U-turn on changes to the winter fuel payment. This separate scheme for pensioners will once again be paid to all those earning under £35,000, instead of just the very poorest.
Every little helps
While £150 won’t cover the full cost of your winter energy bills, it can go a long way, especially if you’re already making savings by being savvy with your usage, switching providers or accessing extra help.
