More than half a million children are set to benefit from this week’s expansion of free childcare.

The government is now offering 30 hours a week of free childcare during term time to working parents of children from nine months to four years old in England.
Ministers believe this could help families save up to £7,500 a year and free up money that can be better spent on quality family time.
A government poll has also found that nearly a third (29%) of parents believe this support will let them increase their work hours.
New resource for parents launched
The government has also launched a new website - beststartinlife.gov.uk – which brings together information, guidance and support for parents.
This well help people find out what childcare help they’re entitled to receive, find local family services and sign up for tailored weekly updates.
Parents will also be able to access advice on key issues such as pregnancy and preparing a child for school.
“With the launch of beststartinlife.gov.uk, we’re giving families the tools, advice and confidence they need to raise happy, healthy children - wherever they’re born and whatever their background,” said prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Childcare expansion will have long-term benefits for children
The government believes the expansion of free childcare will help more children get ready to start school.
This, it said, will lead to better outcomes for children, more chances to improve their life changes and boost social cohesion.
Education secretary Bridget Phillipson described the latest move as “just the beginning”.
“My vision for early years goes beyond this milestone,” she said.
“I want access to high-quality early years for every single family that needs it, without strings and without unfair charges.
“Over the next few years, that is my commitment to parents.”
