According to a poll from Currensea, 17% of mums and dads feel they can’t afford to take their child away during the school holidays.

As a result, many are happy to risk being fined for taking their children out of school during term-time.

Nearly one in four (23%) said they’d be prepared to pay a penalty for going away outside the school holidays.

And almost two-fifths (18%) believe this would be worth it because it would still be cheaper to travel at this time even after being fined.

How much can parents be fined for term-time holidays?

Schools are required to consider fining each parent when a child misses 10 or more sessions (five days) for unauthorised reasons.

Parents can be fined £80 per child, which goes up to £160 if it’s not paid within 21 days.

If they get a second fine for the same child within three years, this will be charged at the higher rate of £160.

Each parent can be fined up to two times within a three-year period.

After that, schools may take further action, such as issuing a parenting order or taking parents to court.

According to government figures, 89% of fines for unauthorised absence are issued for term-time holidays.

Parents ‘feel they have no choice’

“Every moment in school counts and days missed add up quickly,” the Department for Education says.

“Evidence shows that pupils who have good attendance enjoy better wellbeing and school performance than those who don't.”

However, James Lynn of Currensea believes that since parents are under “huge financial pressure”, it’s “no wonder” that so many are willing to risk fines to go on a cheaper family holiday.

“The costs of overseas holidays soar outside of term-time, making it incredibly hard for many families to travel,” he commented.

“Those who do prioritise the family holiday experience can feel faced with no choice but to take kids out of school during term time, with the potential savings of off-peak travel outweighing the impact of any fines.”

More than one in ten parents (11%) said that despite being fined before, they’d consider risking it again to make savings.

12 ways to save money on family holidays

If you’re worried about the cost of a family holiday, then there are ways to keep costs down and save money, without running the risk of being fined.

1.    Plan ahead and book early

It might be too late to grab early-bird deals for this summer, but it's not too early to start planning for 2026.

Many travel companies offer discounts for those who book well in advance, so you can lock in a lower price and spread the cost.

2. Watch for flash sales

Airlines, hotels and tour companies often run short-term promotions.

These flash sales can offer big savings, but they’re time-sensitive, so keep your eyes peeled and be ready to book quickly if a deal pops up.

3. Set up price alerts

Holiday prices change constantly.

Tools like Kayak, Skyscanner and Google Flights let you set up alerts so you’re notified when prices drop for your chosen destination.

That way, you can book at the right time for your budget.

4. Grab a cancelled holiday

Every year, people sell on holidays they can’t go on, often at a discount.

Sites like Transfer Travel let you snap up unused trips for less.

They’re also handy if you need to offload a booking yourself.

5. Be flexible with dates

Being open with your travel dates can make a big difference.

Midweek flights are often cheaper than weekend ones and changing your departure or return by just a day or two could save you a bundle.

6. Compare everything

Don’t just go with the first deal you see.

Use travel comparison sites to shop around.

It can also be cheaper to book flights, accommodation and activities separately - just be sure to factor in extras like transfers and meals to see what works out best.

7. Speak to a travel agent

A trusted travel agent might be able to find you exclusive offers or add in free perks - like room upgrades, transfers or excursions.

They can also recommend budget-friendly destinations you might not have considered.

8. Consider all-inclusive

While an all-inclusive holiday might cost more upfront, it often works out cheaper overall - especially if you’ve got teenagers with big appetites.

With everything from food and drink to entertainment included, it’s easier to stick to your budget.

9. Try alternative accommodation

Hotels aren’t the only option. Think about:

  • holiday rentals or apartments - great for families and often cheaper than hotels
  • camping or glamping - a fun, affordable way to enjoy the great outdoors

10. Book direct with the hotel

Contacting a hotel directly can sometimes get you the best deal - or at least a freebie, like a better room or a welcome drink.

It's always worth asking!

11. Go off the beaten track

Big-name destinations come with big price tags.

Try smaller towns or lesser-known spots for a more affordable - and often more peaceful - holiday experience.

12. Always pay in local currency

If you’re given the option to pay in pounds or local currency when abroad, always choose the local currency.

It avoids extra conversion fees and gives you a better rate.
