The £100 boiler hack that could keep you cosy all winter
If your heating bills made you wince last year, there’s a quick fix that could save you up to £110 this winter. And it takes less than five minutes to do.

It’s all to do with your boiler’s flow temperature - the heat of the water that travels around your radiators. Most boilers are set far too high, often between 75°C and 80°C. That means they’re burning through gas they don’t need to.
By turning it down to around 55°C–60°C, your boiler won’t have to work as hard, but your home will still stay warm and toasty.
It works best for newer condensing boilers, which are designed to run more efficiently at lower temperatures. If yours is a bit older, you can still try lowering it slightly to find the sweet spot where you stay warm but save cash.
And here’s another top tip - keep your thermostat between 18°C and 21°C. That’s the ideal temperature range to stay comfortable and avoid damp or mould.
What to do if you’re worried about heating bills
If you’re worried about heating costs this winter, it’s worth checking whether you qualify for any energy support or hardship schemes from your supplier. Many offer grants, discounted tariffs or help with debt if you’re struggling to pay.
So before you reach for the thermostat, try this simple boiler trick first. It could be the easiest £100 you’ll save all year, and your home will still feel just as snug.
