Turn leftover fruit into healthy homemade smoothies

Have you got strawberries in the fridge that are going a bit soft, bananas turning brown and satsumas that look a bit past their best?

If so, you don’t need to throw them away - you’ve got the ingredients for a tasty, healthy and cheap smoothie.

What you'll need

  • leftover fruit (fresh or frozen)
  • a splash of milk, water or fruit juice
  • a blender

How to make it

  1. Chop any larger fruit into smaller pieces.
  2. Add the fruit to a blender.
  3. Pour in a splash of milk, water or juice.
  4. Blend until smooth.
  5. Add more liquid if needed until it reaches the consistency you want.

Serve straight away.

Why this saves money

A bottle of fruit smoothie can cost a few pounds, so it’s an expensive option if you drink it regularly.

But a homemade smoothie can cost pennies, particularly if you’re using fruit you’ve already got in that was about to be thrown away.

It’s a simple way to cut food waste and make your shopping go further.

A healthier alternative

The added bonus is that you’ll know exactly what’s in your drink.

Bottled smoothies often contain added sugar and preservatives.

So by making it yourself, you can be in control of exactly what it goes into it.

Freeze fruit before it goes off

If you don’t plan to drink a smoothie straight away, get into the habit of putting fruit into the freezer before it goes bad.

Just chop and bag up any fruit that’s getting a bit past its best that you probably won’t eat and bung them in the freezer.

You can then bring it out whenever you fancy a delicious homemade smoothie.

One perk of using frozen fruit is that it can make your drink even thicker and colder.

So it feels like a milkshake, but it's actually one of your five a day.
