Water bills - what help can I get?

Find out what support’s available if you’re struggling to pay your water bill.

Social tariffs

You might be eligible for a discounted rate (social tariff) if you’re on a low income or getting certain benefits.

Each water company will have its own eligibility criteria.

Get in touch with your provider to find out what support they offer and if you qualify.

WaterSure

If you use lots of water because of a medical condition or having three or more school-age children, you may be eligible for the WaterSure scheme.

This initiative helps certain people with high water usage by capping their bills at the average for their area.

To qualify, you’ll need to have a water meter and receive certain benefits, such as:

income-based jobseeker’s allowance

  • income support
  • income-related employment and support allowance
  • universal credit
  • housing benefit
  • pension credit
  • working tax credit
  • child tax credit (at a higher rate than the family element)

Priority Services Register

The Priority Services Register is a free service that means vulnerable people, such as those with disabilities and the elderly, can get tailored help.

Although it doesn’t directly reduce bills, it means water companies can better support people with extra communication, access or safety needs.

Consumer Council for Water

If you’re having any issues with your water company, the Consumer Council for Water can give you free advice and support.

They also offer useful resources on what support schemes are available.

Speak to your water company

It’s illegal for a provider to cut off your water supply.

But they can take legal action if you don’t pay your bill.

If you’re struggling, contact your water provider straight away so they can make sure you get the right support.

Debt support

If you’re behind with your water bill, it may be time to get debt advice.

We can talk you through any suitable debt solutions to help you get back on your feet.

At the same time, we can check you’re getting all the benefits you’re entitled to and offer budgeting advice.
