5 ways to cut costs on New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve is easily one of the most expensive nights of the year.

Whether it’s tickets to a venue or extortionate taxi fares, the cost of enjoying the occasion can easily mount up.
But you don’t have to spend a fortune if you want to ring in 2026 in style.
With just a bit of planning, you can see in the new year without blowing your budget.
1. Watch fireworks from free viewing spots
If there’s an official fireworks display in your city, you don’t necessarily need a ticket to enjoy them.
For example, if you want to see the iconic fireworks display in London, you could head to nearby locations like Cannon Street Bridge, Southwark Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge, or higher viewing points like Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill.
Further north, if you’re in or near Greater Manchester, then Werneth Low is a great place to enjoy panoramic views of countless displays across the area.
Bear in mind though that other people might have had the same idea, so they could get busy on New Year’s Eve, and you’ll still have to check transport arrangements.
2. Find pubs with no entry fees
If you fancy a night out, then remember that not all pubs charge to get in on New Year’s Eve.
Check the social media accounts of your local pubs or even pop in beforehand to ask if they’re charging admission on the big night.
Even if they are charging, it might be at staggered rates, with cheaper entry fees earlier on in the night, so you could get a discount if you’re happy to secure your spot early.
Just a little bit of research could help you find the perfect venue that suits your budget.
3. Host a low-key night in
Going out on New Year’s Eve isn’t compulsory, and it’s okay to have a fairly small, intimate gathering at home with friends and family.
Maybe ask guests to bring something with them, like a snack, a drink or a game, so no one person has to cover the whole cost.
It can be just as fun, and probably much less stressful, than an expensive night out.
4. Watch celebrations on TV or online
The world’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations are broadcast live on TV and online, so you can a taste of the excitement from your own sofa, even if you’re on your own.
It’s warm, free and you don’t have to worry about crowds, queues or how to get home afterwards.
And if you’re hosting a small gathering at your place, putting the New Year’s countdown on TV can really add to the atmosphere and make it a special night for everyone.
5. Go for a midnight walk
If it’s safe to do so and the weather is okay, then why not head out for a late-night walk shortly before midnight?
Local parks, viewing points or quiet streets have a unique atmosphere on New Year’s Eve, and it’s a perfect chance to reflect on the year gone by and the 12 months that lie ahead.
Happy new year!
