Cost of a typical weekly food shop soars 37% in two years
The cost of the average weekly food shop in the UK has shot up by 37% in just two years, new analysis has revealed.
Figures released by the Liberal Democrats show that rising prices have added £870 a year to a typical family’s food shopping bill.
Price rises on the basics
- A loaf of bread has gone up by an average of 37p (31%)
- A pint of milk is up by an average of 24p (57%)
- 500g of cheddar cheese is up by £1.70 (55%)
Plan to reduce food costs
The Liberal Democrats have outlined a four-point plan to help reduce the price of food for struggling families:
- invest more in British farms
- cut energy bills for food businesses
- fix the broken visa system so farmers and fishers can recruit the workers they need
- expand free school meals
Liberal Democrat candidate Emma Holland-Lindsay said the party has:
“a clear plan to get food prices under control, back our local farmers and expand free school meals”
