According to Ofgem, 1.9m closed energy accounts still have credit in them.

And around £240m is still sitting unclaimed.

In most cases, leftover credit is automatically refunded, and more than 90% of balances are returned without customers needing to ask.

But if you’ve moved home or switched supplier and didn’t update your contact details, it can be difficult for your old provider to reach you.

And that means that over time, those refunds simply go unclaimed.

So Ofgem is now calling on people to find out if they might be owed some money.

What do I need to do?

If you’ve moved house in the last five years, contact your suppliers and log into old accounts to update your details.

It’s also worth looking through old emails and letters, especially final bills that might show a closing balance.

And if you’re moving now, keep your direct debit active until your final bill has been settled.

This will make it easier for you to get any refund automatically.

“Moving house requires a lot of life admin and it’s understandable that some things will be missed,” said Tim Jarvis, director general for retail at Ofgem.

“But with almost 2 million closed accounts currently in credit, the message is clear.

“If you’ve moved in the last five years, reach out to your old supplier, provide them with the correct information, and you could be due a refund.”
