Dosh dilemma – Mike’s driving test scam warning

Mike was excited to start driving. He’d passed his theory test first time round and was confident he’d pass the practical test too. But there was a problem. A long waiting list meant he’d have to wait at least six months for a test slot.

Then, he came across a post on social media from someone claiming to be a driving instructor. They said they could get him a full driving licence, without needing to take the test. Tempted by the offer, Mike got in touch.

The person on the phone claimed to be a technician with access to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) database. For £750, he said, they could enter fake test results into the system and have a licence sent to Mike, with no practical test needed.

He asked Mike about his driving experience and requested a screenshot of his provisional licence.

At first, it sounded convincing. But when the man asked for payment upfront via bank transfer, Mike became suspicious. He ended the call and searched online, and sure enough, it was a scam.

Mike now wants to warn others not to fall for it.

What you should do if you come across a driving test scam

  • The DVLA has received many reports of similar scams. They’ve confirmed these offers are fake and not connected to them in any way.
  • If you come across something like this, report it immediately to the police and Action Fraud.
  • If you’ve already sent money, contact your bank right away to try and stop the payment and prevent further transactions.
  • Remember, using or applying for a fake driving licence is a criminal offence and could lead to imprisonment.

Stay safe and always think carefully before you act on requests for personal information or money.
