Households choosing cheaper over greener energy

The number of green energy tariffs has halved in the last year - and the cost-of-living crisis could be partly to blame.

According to Cornwall Insight, there were 24 green dual-fuel tariffs on offer out of 56 total energy deals in summer 2024.

But in summer 2025, there are just 13 dual-fuel green tariffs available out of 57.

Why are green tariffs disappearing?

Cornwall Insight believes demand for tariffs backed by renewable energy has fallen because of cost-of-living pressures.

“Green credentials aren’t a higher priority than cost,” said analyst William Mann-Belotti.

“Amid a cost-of-living crisis, it becomes difficult to sell pure green tariffs at a premium.”

That has, in turn, led to energy suppliers offering fewer green tariffs.

“Consumer choice plays a strong role in what is offered on the market, so cost concerns might see people switching away from more expensive green tariffs,” said Mr Mann-Belotti.

“This would therefore reduce the demand for them.”

He added that this pattern might also have been driven by people looking at other ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

For example, he said there has been “quite the increase” in solar PV installations in the last few years.
