Save the Student, a site that’s been helping students stretch their money since 2007, has teamed up with JS Group to offer six students a £750 bursary each.

It’s part of their mission to make sure no one misses out on university because they can’t afford the start-up costs. With the average Maintenance Loan falling short of basic living costs, this bursary is designed to plug some of that gap and give new students a fairer start.

Who can apply?

To be in with a chance of getting the bursary, you’ll need to:

  • Be starting your first or foundation year at a UK university in the 2025/26 academic year
  • Have a household income of £40,000 or less
  • Qualify for Home Fee Status
  • Have a UK bank account (or open one by the end of August 2025)

The application also asks questions to help understand your background, such as whether you received free school meals, where you live now, if your parents went to university, and if you’re part of any group that’s underrepresented in higher education.

If shortlisted, you’ll need to provide proof of your eligibility. But there’s no need to upload anything when you first apply.

What can you spend the bursary on?

The £750 will be paid through JS Group’s Aspire Cash platform, which is a secure way to get money quickly. You can use it to pay for anything you might need to settle into uni life, including:

  • A laptop or specialist equipment
  • Bedding and kitchenware
  • Clothes or stationery
  • Travel items or course supplies

Important dates

Here’s the timeline to keep in mind:

  • Tuesday 29th April – Applications open
  • Friday 20th June (midday) – Applications close
  • Week of 7th July – Top six shortlisted and asked for proof
  • Week of 21st July – Replacements selected if needed
  • Friday 15th August (after A Level results) – Final checks and bursaries awarded

Even if your plans change on Results Day. Say, you go to your insurance or clearing choice, you’ll still be eligible as long as you’re heading to a UK university.

How to apply

Fill in the online application form.
