Save in the kitchen with homemade chips

Chips are always a crowd-pleaser, particularly if you have kids - but they aren’t always the healthiest or the cheapest option.

So why not make your own at home instead?

They’re healthier, much cheaper, and importantly, really easy to make.

What you’ll need

Serves a family of four

  • four large baking potatoes
  • a little oil (vegetable, sunflower or whatever you have)
  • your favourite seasonings, such as salt, garlic granules, chilli powder or dried herbs

How to make them

1.    Wash the potatoes and cut them into chip or wedge shapes.

2.    Put them in a pan of water and either:

  • boil for seven to 10 minutes, or
  • cover with hot water, put a lid on and leave them a bit longer until they start to soften

3.    Preheat the oven or air fryer to 200°C (180°C fan).

4.    Add a little oil to a roasting tin or baking tray, along with any seasoning you fancy.

5.    Drain the potatoes well, then tip them into the tin.

6.    Toss everything together so the chips are coated in oil and seasoning.

7.    Put the tray straight into the oven and cook for around 20 minutes, until golden and cooked through.

8.    Serve them up alongside whatever you’ve got planned for tea.

Use your freezer to make them last

Homemade chips freeze really well.

So if you don’t want to eat them straight away, let them cool instead of putting them in the oven.

And once cooled, bag them up and pop them in the freezer instead, so you have something tasty and healthy there whenever you need it.

You could even make a big batch if you have a large bag of spuds that you don’t know what to do with or are getting past their best.

It’s much better than just chucking them away, and means you’re not wasting food, money or time.

A single loose potato can cost around 20p, and a 2kg bag is often under £2.

So why not make every penny count on something that’s a guaranteed winner at meal-time?
