Voters ‘looking for action on cost-of-living crisis’
Half (50%) of people in the UK are looking for action on the cost-of-living crisis when it comes to deciding which party to vote for in the next election, new research has revealed.
The report from the Stop the Squeeze group said the issue of tackling rising prices was second only to the NHS in shaping people’s voting intentions.
Other findings
But the same survey found people don’t think the cost-of-living crisis is a priority for either of the main parties. Of those questioned 21% and 23% think it’s a priority issue for the Conservatives and Labour respectively.
Voters tend to think Labour will do a better job of tackling the rising cost of living (40% vs 21%). But, three quarters of those who have more faith in Labour don’t know what the party would do to help.
A golden opportunity
Commenting on the upcoming election, senior economist at the New Economics Foundation said:
“There is a golden opportunity for any political party that can offer voters both a short-term plan to support people through the cost-of-living crisis and the long-term change we need to improve living standards for good.”
