Debt and financial help for veterans
If you’re a veteran and you’re struggling with money, then you don’t have to struggle alone.
Support is available to help you get on a firmer financial footing and reduce your chances of falling into debt.
What financial help is available for veterans?
Veterans and ex-service personnel can access all sorts of financial support.
For instance, you could be eligible for grants which can help you cover emergencies, everyday living costs and other essential expenses.
Contact the Veterans’ Gateway helpline at 0808 802 1212 for information and referral support.
You might also be entitled to claim government benefits such as universal credit.
Charity support is another option, as organisations like Help for Heroes are there to offer tailored guidance and help.
And remember, if you’re struggling financially, don’t ignore bills or letters saying that you owe money.
It’s really important that you ask for help early, rather than let debts build up.
Can I get emergency financial support?
Veterans can access several forms of emergency support.
Crisis grants
You can apply for crisis grants through the Royal British Legion (RBL) so you can get essentials like food vouchers and clothing.
They can also help with accommodation support if you’re homeless and with travel costs that come up at short notice.
Cost-of-living support
Help for Heroes offers support to help veterans manage essential living costs, such as food, heating and basic household bills.
A debt adviser can help you access these emergency funds and let you know how to apply.
Can I get financial help if I’m disabled?
If you were injured or became ill while serving in the armed forces, or if your service led to a pre-existing condition getting worse, you can get support.
Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS)
This provides compensation for injury, illness, or death linked to service.
It can cover all sorts of needs from daily living expenses to medical care and home adaptations.
Additional grants and support
Various military charities, including Help for Heroes, offer grants and financial support to cover the extra costs that come with having a disability.
That can help you pay for essential equipment and home modifications that could help you live more independently.
Can I get financial help if I’m unemployed?
If you can’t work because of illness, injury, or disability, you might be able to claim government benefits, such as:
- universal credit
- personal independence payment
- employment and support allowance
- severe disability premium
If you’re not sure if you qualify for universal credit and other state benefits, we can help.
You can either give us a ring and we’ll check for you, or use our free benefits calculator to see what support you could get.
