Help with eviction

Find out what to do if your landlord is trying to force you out of your home.

Eviction notices

Before being forced to leave your home, your landlord must send you an eviction notice.

There are different types of notice depending on your situation.

Private renters

If you're a private renter, your landlord can evict you using a section 8 notice.

A landlord can only give you a section 8 notice if they have a legal reason for wanting to evict you.

No-fault evictions, or section 21 notices, have been banned since 2026.

Social housing tenants

If you live in social housing, your landlord must serve you with a notice seeking possession before applying to the court for a possession order.

Find out more about the eviction process if you’re a social tenant.

Housing associations may also be able to serve you with a section 8 notice.

Homeowners

If you're a homeowner and have fallen behind on your mortgage payments, as a last resort, your lender can start the repossession process.
