So how does our debt advice work?
You can start your debt advice journey online or over the phone. And you can switch between the two channels at any time.
Before you begin your journey, it’s a good idea to gather together any documents that show how much money you have coming in and what you spend that money on. This might include:
- bank statements
- benefit letters
- utility bills
- payslips
- credit card/loan statements

All our debt advice is free. Some solutions are free. For others, there’s a fee.
First things first
To make sure you’ve come to the right place, we’ll start by asking a few questions about your situation. We can help you with your financial wellbeing in a whole host of ways from budgeting tips right through to setting up a debt solution.
Your debts
Once we’ve established you’re in the right place, we’ll need details of your debts. We can get this information from your credit file – this won’t affect your credit rating.
Or you can provide the details yourself. If you prefer to do it this way, it’s helpful to have the information to hand when you start your journey. But you can always take a break to find it and come back later.
A budget you can stick to
Once we have details of your debts, we’ll ask you about the money you have coming in and your living costs. Using this information, we’ll come up with a realistic budget that you can stick to. Your new budget will show us if you have any money left over to pay towards your debts.
A way forward
By this point, we’ll have enough information to suggest a way forward that works for you. This could be anything from budgeting support through to a debt solution.
By your side
If we recommend a debt solution and you decide to go ahead, you’re in safe hands with us.
We’ll:
- talk you through the process in detail
- deal with lenders on your behalf whenever we can
- help get your solution up and running where possible
- be on hand to answer any questions you have
Boosting your income
As part of your debt advice journey, we’ll also see if we can help you increase your income. We’ll check whether you can get any benefits you’re not currently claiming and look into any grants you can apply for.

Our online debt advice is available 24/7 so you can access it at a time and place to suit you. If you prefer to start your journey over the phone, call us on 0161 518 8285. We’re here to help seven days a week:
