Astronomical vet fees putting pet ownership out of reach? Get your animal fix for free
If you love animals but can’t afford a pet, you’re not alone. According to the BBC, an increasing number of pet owners are having their sick animals put to sleep because they can’t afford soaring vet bills.

But if pet ownership is out of reach, don’t despair. There are ways to get your animal fix without the commitment or the cost. Here are some ideas on how you can spend time with pets and other animals completely free (or very cheap).
1. Try house or pet sitting
If you’re open to a bit of responsibility, house sitting is a fantastic way to get your pet fix. Many people need someone to look after their pets while they’re on holiday, and in return you get free accommodation and plenty of quality time with their furry friends.
Try:
- TrustedHousesitters
- HouseSitMatch
- Local Facebook groups and community boards
2. Volunteer at an animal shelter
Animal charities and rescue centres are often crying out for volunteers to help walk dogs, play with cats or clean out animal enclosures. It’s a brilliant way to help animals in need while doing what you love.
Try:
- RSPCA volunteering
- Blue Cross
- Local animal rescue centres or sanctuaries
3. Sign up as a dog walker
You don’t need to own a dog to enjoy daily walkies. Apps like BorrowMyDoggy connect people with local dog owners who need help with walks or dog-sitting. You’ll get fresh air, exercise and wagging tails, all without the bills.
Try:
- BorrowMyDoggy
- Local dog walking Facebook groups
- Ask neighbours or relatives if they need a hand
4. Visit city farms or petting zoos
Many towns and cities have free or low-cost community farms where you can meet goats, pigs, chickens and more. It’s a great day out for kids and grown-ups alike.
Try:
- Spitalfields City Farm (London)
- The Donkey Sanctuary
- Search ‘free city farms near me’
5. Foster animals short-term
Some charities are looking for temporary foster carers to look after animals before they’re permanently rehomed. It’s a rewarding way to help an animal in need, and you won’t be on the hook for long-term costs.
Try:
- Local animal shelters
- Cats Protection fostering
- Breed-specific rescues looking for temporary homes
6. Take up animal photography
If you love being around animals and have a creative streak, try taking photos of pets for fun, or even as a side hustle. Offer to snap pictures for friends’ pets or local rescue charities in need of social media content.
All you need is a smartphone and some patience.
