From 12–21 September, families, friends, and solo explorers can enjoy a variety of sites across England - all without paying an entry fee. It’s a great way to get out, learn something new, and enjoy beautiful surroundings on a budget.
What are Heritage Open Days?
Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest festival of history and culture. For one week, many sites that usually charge for entry will open their doors for free. You can enjoy tours, activities, and workshops – a brilliant way to experience local history without spending a penny.
Top sites to visit
- Prior Park, Bath – Wander through 18th-century gardens and cross the iconic Palladian bridge on 12–13 September.
- Standen House and Garden, West Sussex – Explore the house and gardens for free on 12–13 September.
- Gunby Hall and Gardens, Lincolnshire – Enjoy the estate and local produce stalls on 13–14 September.
- Chartwell, Kent – Take part in the 'Inspired by Chartwell' painting competition on 15 September.
Making the most of your free day out
Looking to make the most of your free visit? It’s worth checking ahead, as some sites may require pre-booking, and popular locations can get busy, so arriving early gives you more time to explore. Packing a picnic is a smart way to enjoy a relaxing lunch without extra costs, and using public transport can save money on fuel and parking while also being kinder to the environment. With a little planning, you can enjoy a full day of history, beautiful gardens, and hidden gems without spending a penny.
Heritage Open Days are a wonderful way to enjoy England’s history, beautiful scenery, and hidden gems – all while keeping your wallet happy.
